The Ives-Putnam House was built in 1850 by a prominent printer- publisher William Ives. The building has participated in the economic life of the Salem community by serving as an investment property for most of its lifetime. It was operated as the Salem Inn during the early years of the 20th century. It was subsequently operated as an apartment building ever since.
